About Swags & Volts

Swags & Volts is a set of free 12V power calculators and plain English guides for Australians setting up a 4WD, ute, camper trailer, caravan or motorhome to camp off the grid. It answers the questions every build starts with: how big a battery, how much solar, what DC-DC charger, and what size cable and fuse for each run.

It is built by Les, a solo maker based in Gippsland, Victoria, under the Sloane Industries name. The site started because sizing a 12V system meant juggling forum threads, maker brochures and half-remembered rules of thumb. Swags & Volts puts the maths in one place and shows every step, so you can see why a number came out the way it did.

The advice comes from real setups as well as the numbers. Les runs a Redarc DC-DC charger that has been going strong for nearly ten years, a Renogy 3000 W inverter in his pickup, and a Victron solar controller in his motorhome. That mix is why the guides talk about what each brand does well instead of pushing one.

Swags & Volts is for planning. It is not a substitute for a qualified auto electrician, and any 240V work must be done by a licensed electrician. The disclaimer covers the fine print.

Free to use

Every calculator works without an account. Sign in only if you want to save a rig and come back to it.

The maths is shown

Every result has its working underneath, so you can check it or take it to your auto electrician.

Brand neutral

The calculators recommend sizes, never brands. No manufacturer pays for a result.

Built for Australia

Sun hours come from Bureau of Meteorology solar data by region and season, and cable sizes use the auto and B&S sizes sold here.
